The WFAA Field Field Masters Tour kicked off on February 4th at the notoriously difficult course at Fonmon in the Vale of Glamorgan. With the first leg being this early in the year and with the Tour only having been launched four weeks previously, attendance was expected to be low. However, on the day we saw far more entrants than expected. Clear blue skies, no wind and higher than average temperatures made for near perfect conditions and scores did not disappoint. In the Gents freestyle unlimited division, experience told as Dave Home won comfortably, having dropping just two points throughout. Geraint Thomas was not far behind, claiming second place but Andrew Lewis was unable to fight off Malcolm Staley of March Hare, who took 3rd place. Welsh veteran international Bob Lloyd put in a solid performance to win the Veteran Unlimited Gents division. The Gents freestyle recurve group saw close shooting between Steve Lloyd, Mathew Symmonds and Richard Doore, all of Llantwit Major. There was nothing in it at half time but Doore and Symmonds pulled ahead after the break. With just seven targets left, Doore made a critical sighting error which gave Symmonds a clear lead which he maintained to claim the victory. In the Gents barebow recurve division, Mark Lunn impressed once again with a solid score to take the victory, whilst in the Gents barebow compound group, a brave effort from Matt Howard was not enough to secure a win over English international Wayne Evans. The younger archers impressed again with Michael Morgan and Sarah Wallington claiming wins in the Junior barebow recurve male and female divisions. Meanwhile, Kieran O’Callaghan, who claimed an impressive victory last month at the Welsh Indoor Championships, pushed hard for a victory on his first outdoor tournament. Despite a brave effort, Kieran was eventually pushed into third place by experienced archers Tom Phillips and Michael Evans, both of Worcester. A large attendance is expected for stage 2 which takes place at March Hare Archers’ course at Throckmorton, Worcestershire on 11th of March. Click here for a full results list |
