Squad News:

Nigel Kent Promoted to Welsh National Squad
Congratulations to Nigel Kent of Llantwit Major Archers. After narrowly missing out on a Welsh Squad place in December, Nigel was awarded a place on the Development Squad. Three very strong performances in the first quarter of the year has meant that Nigel has now been promoted to the National Squad. Well done Nigel!

2008 Welsh Squads Selected
Congratulations go to all of the archers selected for the Welsh National and Welsh Development Squads for 2008. Standards have improved dramatically in Wales over the last few years and this has made selection difficult for 2008.  Those of you selected will receive formal notification shortly. Everyone who has won a place in either squad has worked very hard over the last year to secure their throughly deserved places. Well done all!

Changes to the Management of the Welsh Squads
Geraint Thomas takes on the new role of Welsh Squads Manager from December 2007. The WFAA General Committee thanks Gary Hart and Mathew Symmonds who have stepped down from the roles of Welsh Squad Manager and Welsh Squad Logistics Manager respectively. Geraint's new role will include management of all aspects of both Welsh Squads including the logistics of overseas tours.

Selection Criteria Raised for Welsh National Squad
In line with our strategy for raising the standards of field archery in Wales, the qualifying criteria has been raised, meaning that only archers who are classified A class and higher will be considered for selection. Archers shooting at a good B class standard may be selected for the Welsh Development Squad. Whilst the initial squads have now been selected, the Squad Manager reserves the right to select more members to both Squads as the year unfolds, based upon performance, commitment and tournament results. The Squad Manager may also move archers from the Development to the National Squad if their performance justifies it. Development activities such as coaching sessions will take place during 2008 to further realise our aim of raising the standard of shooting in Wales.

Welsh Development Squad
The all new Welsh Development Squad consists of archers who have not quite qualified for the National Squad but who the selectors feel are shooting close to a standard where selection to the National Squad is likely. Archers who are selected for the Development Squad will be offered assistance and support to help them improve their form and complete the transition from club to international level field archery.
